We build beautiful lake front homes, and we love what we do. Helping people build their dream cottage is a privilege we don't take lightly. We realize that it is a lot more than bricks and mortar. Building a cottage is choosing a lifestyle. It is a about family and friends. Being close to nature. Enjoying happy hour on the dock, or kayaking at sunset.
Design - Is the starting point
Designing a cottage is not as simple as it might seem. There is a lot to consider. What is the topography like? Will there be a dock, a guest house, a garage? Are there viewing areas or decks to be considered? Natural areas that shouldn't be disturbed? Even special trees and rocks are considered when deciding how to nestle into the landscape. Sunrises, sunsets and sunshine exposure always play a key role in planning. All of this and more must be considered before the cottage design even begins.
Every situation is unique. Most of our customers utilize the skills of an architect and or designer If you have already have some one on board that is great. We look forward to working with him or her. If you would like to have us recommend someone we would be more than pleased to do so. We can help you build your home from initial design right through the entire building process.
People - Make it work
As in most businesses finding, developing and motivating the right staff is critical to the success of the company and has a significant impact on every build . We look for a number of things when we hire and develop our staff. The first and most important thing is pride in their work. Every staff member realizes how fortunate they are to be able to work on such beautiful buildings, in such idyllic settings. They are proud of their work and have a passion for building. This is of course the building block for quality. Going the extra mile is what is expected by both the company and the customers.
Quality of work and craftsmanship are critical.
Many of our customers are making the single largest investment in their lives. It is critical to know that the craftsmanship they receive is focused on excellence. It is important to make sure that the passion is backed up by talent and a mixture of skills and attitude. We are constantly looking to develop and improve our team through on the job training, mentoring, motivating and, of course, recruiting. We are continually striving to improve in every aspect of our work.
As a general contractor we do not do all of the tasks in the build. At times we are working with sub trades such as electricians, plumbers, masons, designers, etc. Our experience and expertise allows us to choose which sub trades we use on a given project. It is important to select the trades wisely. We look for companies that share our commitment to quality, value and teamwork. We consider them an important part of our team.
Materials - that complement your environment
Of course there are many ways to design and build a cottage. The choices range from modern to rustic. That choice is personal. Our job is to work with the customer and designer to execute on that vision. Whether it be conventional, timber frame or log, we will be with you every step of the way. The materials used on these projects are typically very natural with a skew to wood and stone finishes with earthy color schemes. However, others look for a modern style using materials that minimize maintenance down the road. The choice is yours.
Site Conditions - that are a feature as opposed to a problem
Building in the Canadian Shield creates all sorts of opportunities to make a cottage special. We have encased rock feature walls, created rock fire pits and roasting pits, and built gazebos and view points, along with designing home theaters and natural rock fireplaces. And of course, we have built the many types of stairs, decks and docks needed to accompany your home.
On the practical side, building foundations on the shield is challenging and costly. We take pride in our unique ability to build quality foundations. In particular we pay attention to managing water conditions, and ensuring that the foundation is both sturdy and consistent through out. In the majority of cases the foundations are pinned to bedrock with oversized steel. It doesn't get any better than that. Your foundation will remain level and solid for ever.
